His tire went flat on the way in today. He openly admits to not being a car guy, but seriously?

Here's a Nash.

that's what I call a failure in drivers education.

Lucky he even has a spare! I used to drive for AAA, there are some people who maybe can do it, but really shouldn't.

Giving the guy the benefit of the doubt: if it was a driver side and on the interstate I would consider doing the same. Way too many shitty drivers out there.

Depends where you at really.

If I am stuck on the elevated highway around here that has no shoulder to speak of, yeah, I am calling a tow.

If I am on my steelies I'll just try to limp off at the next exit, but I'd rather not destroy my summer wheels and refuse to risk my life for $100.

Sadly, if I were to get a flat I would probably need to call AAA.

But I broke my back and have a 25lbs weight limit.

Now, I will openly admit I've called AAA before to replace a tire, not because I didn't know how, or because I was being lazy. This happened because after the tire blew out, I tried to remove the wheel and 3 of the 5 lugs came off but 2 had basically frozen to the stud. I had my dad come over and same story. We called AAA and they came out and used an air gun and even then they took longer and more effort than they should have. The AAA guy and us had a good laugh about our own incompetence and all was good.

Definitely a humbling moment though.

How long are you going to be on restriction?

This is true. One of my brothers helped another brother change is brakes once. The brother being helped is not a car guy, and the one brake he worked on ended up falling off on the freeway.

Yeah. It depends on the width of the shoulder also. The elevated section around here has barely any shoulder. If I ever get a flat on that stretch, I am either limping it off on my steelie or if on my summers calling a tow. Don't even care. Life not worth $100.

Not really sure. I was just upped to 25 from 8 and was told I could take my brace off when I feel like I'm able.

My dad made us learn all that basic stuff before we got our permits, but meh.

The only time I got a flat, I was about 17 and pulled into a parking lot, got the spare out, got the Mercury jacked up (shit that reminds me I need a Hi-Lift jack and a full-size spare now) and I was all excited to attack the lugnuts and do CAR THINGS!

And then the most stereotypically sexy fireman dudebro pulled up and offered to help, so I let him change the tire :)

Unless there is something physically preventing him from doing he has to hand in his man card...

I had to do that once because I couldn't get the regular tire off because the lug nuts were over tightened and the wheel was partially rusted on. This of course after the tire got slashed.

We once had to call the AA to get the wheel off our MGF. We thought it was a simple puncture, right up until we removed all the lug nuts and found out we couldn't pull the wheel off. We struggled with it for about 5 minutes before giving in and calling the burly men.

And then funnily enough, it took them nearly 30 minutes to prise the wheel off, using everything from a mallet to brute force. Turns out the pothole we ran over was so deep, we managed to warp the wheel.

Formal office? If it meant possibly sacrificing a 100s or 1000s of dollars suit, it might be better to let AAA handle it. Or if you've got customer meetings with lots of handshaking with the money, then discretion might be the better part of valor. Or he's lazy. Dunno.

I think he's just afraid of doing it wrong. Years of working in occupational safety seems to have gone to his head.

Isn't this one of the reasons more and more new cars are coming without spare tires?

- Most people don't know how to change them out anyway

- Weight and space savings
